On April 26, 2017 the museum board of directors approved the acquisition of Quantum, a work of installation art by Jon Clark, Angus Powers, and Jesse Daniels. It is a gift of the artists to the museum.

Wisdom by Alex Bernstein is a gift of Gerald Silverstein and Robert Zimmerman. The 2003 sculpture is cast crystal and iron and measures 5 x 2.75 x 18 inches.

The Quantum installation combines more than 3,500 blown glass blades of grass with video and sound to create a contemporary, captivating and immersive sensory experience.  It is inspired by nature, and yet the appearance is not immediately obvious.  Rather, it is one of mystery, wonder, and for some visitors even confusion, until they absorb the environment for a while.  From the artists’ point of view, the work is intended to bring the viewer to their own conclusions and reminiscences.  For art museums, presenting installation art like Quantum is an important means of advancing art appreciation in its audiences.

Jan Mirenda Smith, the executive director of the museum says, “Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass is pleased to have works in its collection that present glass from its early history, in the form of ancient beads that were owned by Evangeline Bergstrom, to the gifts of the 21st century from Jon Clark, Angus Powers, and Jesse Daniels, and Gerald Silverstein and Robert Zimmerman.  The works add greatly to a collection of history, innovation, beauty and intellect that offers a small glimpse of the continuum of glass as an art form.“

Quantum is on view through August 20th and Wisdom will be on view beginning the week of May 22nd  at Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass.
